The human body is incredibly complex. A general practitioner can provide support with preventative care, but sometimes a specialist is needed to diagnose and treat more specific concerns. Choosing a fellowship-trained rhinologist like Dr. Eric F. Succar, M.D., can help ensure you’re getting the best possible care and the answers that you need. Read on to learn more.
Rhinology is the study of the nose, including the anatomy and/or diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses. A rhinologist can help with a variety of concerns, including nasal polyps, sinus tumors, chronic sinusitis, and more. As specialists, rhinologists are experts in their field—after all, they devote all of their time each day to this one specific field!
Most doctors start out as general physicians, learning a breadth of information about the human body. Over time, they may choose to train in a specialty. This training typically includes shadowing an existing specialist during a process known as ‘fellowship training’ since the physician shadowing the specialist is referred to as a ‘fellow.’ Fellowship training takes place after the physician completes their residency. Duration of fellowship training depends on the specialty but can take anywhere from 1–3 years on average.
It’s not easy to become a specialist! The education time and in-depth level of knowledge required means that many physicians choose not to pursue a specialty. Data from Statista shows that of the almost one million physicians in the United States, only just over 550,000 of them are considered specialists. In fact, out of the 296 ARS (American Rhinologic Society) members who self-identify as rhinologists, only 69.2% are fellowship-trained.
There are many incredible benefits to seeing a fellowship-trained rhinologist. For starters, specialists have specific expertise in their field, giving patients the best care and treatment options possible. Specialists stay up to date with the most cutting-edge information, including research articles, journals, and networking with peers. Fellowship-trained specialists can also provide comprehensive care since they have a more in-depth understanding of any health concerns a patient may be experiencing.
In addition to being a board-certified otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist), Dr. Succar is also a fellowship-trained rhinologist. He completed his advanced sinus and endoscopic skull base surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, in 2019.
Dr. Succar is incredibly passionate about providing quality adult and pediatric care in southeast Michigan. He also maintains his expertise as a specialist by publishing peer-reviewed research articles and is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Rhinologic Society, and the Michigan Otolaryngology Society.
